First, you need to create an account before you are allowed to edit. After you become a registered user, you will be able to edit this database.

Learn to Edit a Page

This database, similarly to Wikipedia, uses its own very simple and easy-to-learn “syntax”, or code. Learn more about this syntax here.

If you are logged in, you will see that there is a “edit this page” tab at the top of each page. Click on that and an editing box will appear.

You could actually begin editing if you only know that to create a line break (the equivalent of pressing “Enter” on your keyboard when you are in a Word document), then you simply need to insert

where you want the line break to be.

To italicize text, simply use this formatting:

There are also buttons at the top of the editing box that make editing easier by inserting the syntax you want for you.

To Create A Page

This database is being created on the go by users like you. It is likely that there is not yet a page for the species for which you would like to add an entry. Feel free to create pages!

There are two ways to create a page:

Method 1: Enter “http://database.hkexplorers.org/doku.php?id=wiki:XXX_XXX” into your address bar, replacing XXX_XXX with the name of the page you would like to create.

For example, to create a page for the “wild pig”, enter in “http://database.hkexplorers.org/doku.php?id=wiki:wild_pig” into your browser's address bar. Use a “_” for any spaces in your page's name. You will then have see the option to “create a page” at the top. Click on this and start editing!

Method 1: Create a link to a page that does not exist yet. Click on that link. You will then have see the option to “create a page” at the top. Click on this and start editing your newly created page!

Basic Species Page Structure

Basic Information

There is basic information that is needed for each page:

- Scientific name:
- Common name:
- Endemic?
- Sources

Sightings

Please add any sightings you've add! Include the time, date, location (GPS coordinates if possible) and if you would like, your name. Add any pictures you might have as well! Again, please include the time, date, location (GPS coordinates if possible) and if you would like, your name (or the photographer's name).

Pictures

To add a picture, click on the button when you are editing a page. Click on “select files..”, pick your picture, and click “Upload”. When it is done uploading, click on your file name, select the options you wish and click “Insert”.

Don't forget to add your new page to the right list of animals! For example, if you have just made the page for the wild pig, click on “Mammals” in the menu on the left. Edit the page to add a link to your “wild pig” page.

Navigation Menu

If you want to edit the navigation menu (the list on the left of the page), then go to the Navigation page and edit it using the regular database syntax.

Add, edit and re-organize pages as you see fit. This is a crowd-sourced effort and everyone can play as large or as small of a part as they wish. For example, if you think this page could include another paragraph, feel free to add it!
